Summary Of 2007 Resolutions

Checking on my 2007 Resolutions , this has become my yearly habit and a reminder to myself.

  1. Lose Weight - i just weight myself before i write this post , it show me 86.6KG. Although is a bit far from my target, but i believe this is a good results, when i came back from my taiwan trip , i even reach 96~97 KG, by the help of medicine, gym and some control, this weight issue seem like under control, this is my slimest time for the past 5 years , consider after i come back from aus.
  2. Travel - Yeah i went to taiwan very last min, after i found a new job, these are some of the post about this trip.
  3. Switching 50% of PC time to Linux - erm not sure consider success or not, now i m spending 100% on mac , other then my working hour.
  4. Increase my blog income - 80% success , for the past 1 year i m getting 5 payout only.
  5. Increase my saving - failure ! with many reason like i spend quite a big amount for my taiwan trip, changing a new job with pro-rated 13th month bonus and buying a few gadgets.
  6. Learn Ruby with Ruby On Rails - failure again .. 2 year already, think i give up this.
  7. Project - failure , this a quiet year for me nothing much on the development

i haven’t think about this year resolutions , this year should be more changes …

my blog version 8 update

Finally i did the modification that i want , there are certain part still need to finalize but this should be my new blog theme. This is a make over yichi’s famous theme - Resurrection

I did select quite a number of themes to test locally, this is one of theme that attract my eye ball, when looking for a new theme to replace my currently one, especially the twitter bird. i though i won’t be changing a lot of thing since i m quite happy with the original design, but at the end i try with my setting , test with my different plugins and trying to make different effect on my blog.

of course only theme upgrade is not enough, at the same time i did quite a few upgrade on all the plugins, remove unwanted plugins , put in some recommended plugins. I m happy for this release.

Kick start of 2008

It seem like a bit late, but this is my first post on year 2008 ,  it seem like i been disappear for quite a while, nope i never give up on blogging , just that i took a long break.

This blog without any post since 19th Dec , there are 2 random post on end of 2007 , until today 13th of Jan 2008 , it’s nearly one month break, i completed my new theme and kick start of my blog engine again.

There are quite a few thing that keep me busy , one of the reason is working on this theme and the other reason is i m busy playing World Of Warcraft again ,  yeah one of the hot MMORPG that i playing few year ago, until 30 min ago , i m 20% more experience to reach level 70, the max level of this game.

I think lots of post is pending in my mind, example like going through 2007 resolutions , prepare 2008 resolutions and some of the topic that i been keep in my todo list, lets just hope i m still have fresh memory on things that i would like to blog.

anyway l want to say one more time , lets hope 2008 rocks !

Happy New Year 2008 !

Nothing special for this year, although it’s been 2 year i never stay at home during this last day of the year. For the past 2 year i been stand by @ sentosa due to work, this year since i change job already, i been stay at home for the past 2 week just to clear my leave, a totally different life style.

this will be a short one, let see if tomorrow i can squeeze out some time to blog about what happen on 2007 ? any way this post might be slightly early but i wish every one that see this post ..

Images migration for my blog

Finally i have completed the images migration for most of the image on my blog, this is one of the main task during this holiday season, i thought i can patch all the data within one day, at the end i spend about 3 and half day to complete it, argh ! i need to become more detail when doing patching.

Why am i thinking to do images migration in the first place ? flickr, for the past one year i have a flickr pro account, so most of my blog image is post from flickr, but now i m thinking to unsubscribe this service and to consolidate all the images under my own vps. But more issue appear after i start working on it.

  • domain issue, some of the image still pointing on old domain, in stead of current domain
  • plugin issue, i use quite a few image plugin before, some of the images path are incorrect
  • emotion icons issue, this is one of the feature with a WYSIWG editor plugin, although i have remove this plugin already, but all the emotion icons tag still remaining in the post content
  • need to replace flickr image path

the first thing is getting a new images plugin for this blog , after some testing and research , i decided to use NextGEN Gallery , i download the whole database and doing some analysis on local database.

  • what need to be patch ? going through all image tag and find out, is this my own flickr image ? or just a external link ? is this old domain image still available ?
  • how to patch ? just learn mysql replace function from work, no doubt i need to run a patching sql image by image base on different case
  • patching with new feature ? this is the last thing that wasted my whole morning, i forget to patch the images to make use of the new plugin features

Finally one of my biggest goal for this holidays done, i wonder how many more goal can i complete before starting of work ? Another goal which quite troublesome would be changing of this blog theme, i have a choose the theme already but it seem like a lot of rework need to be done.

VPS choice strike again

Recently decided to get a VPS again , i mention on it on my twitter and one of the friend actually twitter me how many VPS did you get for the past 6 month ? this should be my 7th VPS for this year ?

i have trial quite a few vps, so far none of them meet my need, one of the reason might be because i m in between beginner and advance user. if i m totally beginner, i might not notice things that the VPS host never did, if i m advance enough i can just solve those problem myself, even when i get managed vps i still having the same problem.

so 2 day ago i order a vps from zone.net, see quite some good review about them (+v) , they have server in LA, which give me a good ping (+v) , their server seem getting quite good performance on unixbenchmark (+v) and they are having promotion for managed vps + directadmin is cost about $52.

but after my order placed and i start having issue with one of the support there and i have reported to their GM and i m thinking to leave, ya i can make complaint about the staff but when my data all migrated over , what will happen ? if the staff not happy about my complaint, he just need to do something over my vps, i will be doom! anyway still waiting for the GM to investigate and see how it goes, but mostly i will stop using it.

the so call green hosting which provide Solar Powered Hosting, i m thinking to make use of their hosting package but too bad they don’t provide ssh on webhosting package, they do have some good deal on their vps ( 384mb vps $21 / 512mb vps $25.19 + directadmin $10+ free mysql db on their dedicated mysql server) but their management service cost ($30) is a bit high to me.

one of the famous old player in the vps market, i trial theri vps before but due to semi-managed, at the end i didn’t use them, but now they are upgrade to provide full management. their vps package ( 320mb vps $40 + directadmin $5 + full management with 10% discount), california datacenter give me a good ping too. their reputation is quite good in WHT , some unixbenchmark that post by their user is extremely high also.

rockmyweb

one of the new comer for the vps market, i trial their vps before, but we have some argument on certain support issue, so in the end i only stay for one month. So why am i looking at them again ? seriously to say after the incident they did try their best to do service recovery but i never take it ( i m stubborn sometime ) and it seem like quite a number of good review appear in WHT . Their vps package ( 640MB vps $33 + directadmin $7 + basic management ), their ping although is higher compare with the previous 2 vps provider, but still around 260ms, which i think should be ok.

One of the main attractive point on rockmyweb is their resourcement management , giving you dedicated resource, there are good and bad for this, but it seem more reasonable to me.

currently my final choice will be either knownhost or rockmyweb , while waiting a reply from zone.net, headache for my choice.

start of holidays

Compare to the rest of people, i start my holidays earlier , yesterday was my last working day for 2007 and starting of today i will on leave, about 2 weeks leave.

Why take such a long leave ? because the new company that i joined is not allow to bring foward leave, you must clear your leave within the year, although i joined the company during august, which give me about 6.5 day leave, add in the 2 public holidays and half day before the public holdays = 2 weeks leave !

i already arrange many plans an goals for this 2 week to get myself busy and clear some of thing that i want to do since starting of 2007. Yeah i feel like a freenlancer now !

Self Host ? or Hosted ? for your blog post’s image

I have prepare some work for my long holidays, one of the things i been thinking about is shall i self host my blog post image ? or shall i use some hosted service ?

When i first started my blog, all the image that i post in my blog , is self host on the same hosting server, it does use up partial of your host bandwidth but at the same time, it bring you some visitors also.  After some time , i decided to use some hosted service for my blog post image and i subscribed Flickr

My reason getting hosted service is because

  • reduce my bandwidth usage
  • through flickr service might be able to bring in more traffic
  • no need to worry about hotlink
  • flexible, i can just make use the same image on different platform

Since i become flickr pro, half of my image is still self host ( no time to migrate ) and the other half is hosted by flickr. After one year, it’s almost time to renew my flickr service and i m trying to measure is there a need to renew ? just for this blog post purpose ? Google still bring in visitor for my self host image, but i not sure is flickr bring in extra traffic ?

The Recent Me

It’s been a week since my last blog post, geez  ! i been busy for some personal issue and my work, today finally i manage to squeeze a bit of my time and mood to blog.

For my work, i can only say bug after bug , tons of bug, my current working environment is using bugzilla as main tools, so most of time the user will bug the issue and i wil need to get my work start. Currently just finish some of the biggest project, which i spend lots of time in office and home.

For my personal issue, today have a better outcome, i wish this could be maintain, it’s tough but need to spend more effort on it.

Although i stop blogging for one week, my delicious list have 10 url been tag as 2blog and 6 items in my GTD list is 2blog also , i just bookmark it or take note when the idea pop up, but some time because of timing , i might start thinking to blog the topic after no more heat , at the end i will just leave up, lets hope by the next few day i can actually clear all topics.
